Owner A.J. Pelletier
Helping Small Businesses Grow
"We know that the better we answer our clients’ questions, the more valuable our services are to them. The challenge is in viewing their businesses in a unique way and giving them management advice they can’t get anywhere else."
A.J. has carved a unique and successful position for his bookkeeping, payroll and consulting firm by helping his clients ask the right questions and get the right answers.
.
Small Businesses Need Help
"Small businesses often need help with cash flow—sometimes they’re behind in taxes––they don’t have adequate financial statements or accounts receivable aging information, So they call on bookkeeping firms like ours for the consulting help they need."
A.J. cites three major components in his bookkeeping software that have enabled him to help his clients more effectively:
The ability to create customized graphs with virtually any kind of information,
The ability to make accurate and detailed full year projections before year-end, and
The ability to carry non-financial information on the financial statement.
Customized Graphs
"We use our graphing capabilities to present detailed information, customized for the client, in a clear way they can understand. Because they’re so flexible graphs are tailor-made to show categories of income or expenses; for example, in a specific period of time the client needs to see." By understanding this type of detail, clients can better manage their cash flow.
Accurate Projections
"Any software can do straightline projections and arrive at a year-end profit projection. With ours, we can deal with other categories that impact the business––not just profit. We can look at the actual plus and minus detail and seasonal patterns for much more accurate and realistic projections."
Once a client has been with us for a year and we have more than 12 months of data, our software enables us to establish a projection coefficient, based on actual revenues and expenses over various time periods throughout the year. "Seasonal fluctuations can significantly impact a client’s business. The better handle we have on the seasonality of the business in detail, the more accurate and realistic our projections and the better our clients can plan. The more helpful we are to our clients," says A.J., "the better we feel."
Financial Statements with Non-Financial Information
We have also made extensive use of our softwares ability to carry fields for non-financial information on financial statements. "This is great for recording information and developing meaningful ratios, such as costs, expenses, or revenue comparisons by square foot, man hours, or equivalent personnel. I use our software to compare a lot more than just prior year sales over current year sales. Now that’s a service our clients need and our competition just can’t offer."

Boston University
New School of Management
After studying economics and computer science at Boston College and earning an MBA at Boston University, A.J. joined the Finance staff of Ford Motor Company. Twelve years later, he joined the financial staff of Datapoint Corporation in San Antonio—at that time one of the largest suppliers of local area networks, becoming Controller of the Advanced Technology Department in 1984. During the mid-80s, A.J. had an opportunity to do some small-business consulting. His expertise in bookkeeping and computer technology became the key to growth for several small businesses, and he says one of the payoffs was the personal satisfaction that it gave him. The level of satisfaction was so great, in fact, that, in late 1985, A.J. decided to open his own bookkeeping office in San Antonio and to purchase a Comprehensive Business Services franchise. Twenty years later, he says, "I love what I’m doing––I still find it very exciting and challenging." In 2003 AJ dropped his affiliation with Comprehensive and became Creative Business Solutions, a name better suited to his present business model.
